About

Hi there!

I’m so glad to meet you! My name is Hilary, I hail from Toronto, Canada, and I am passionate about creating! Be it music, graphic design, wood-working, or fine arts, I am in. Creating is all about looking inside yourself, and then expressing what you see and feel with the tools at your disposal.

I love working with other creative people because of the sense of community they create. Passing on your knowledge of your craft to others, and helping them along their creative journey is important to me, and one of the reasons I created Milky Octopus.

I started in crochet, but over the years I’ve learned that it isn’t just crochet that I love. I also love loom knitting and weaving. And cross-stitching and embroidery. What I really love, is working with yarn. Understanding that gave me the realization that I didn’t have to limit myself to any one technique, and by opening myself up to more than just crochet gave me the licence to truly create anything I wanted. So I did. //

//SLOW FASHION | I aim to create timeless, quality pieces that will last you season after season.

The pieces I create are designed to showcase the beauty of the yarn. Minimalistic stitch patterns and clean lines enhance the yarns natural textures, creating beautiful quality garments. I called my line Slow Fashion for both the literal and philosophical. Yes, it takes me hours to produce each piece, but it’s also about something more. “Slow Fashion is about designing, producing, consuming and living better… a different approach in which designers, buyers, retailers and consumers are more aware of the impacts of products on workers, communities and ecosystems” (K Fletcher, Ecologist, 2007).

//HANDMADE HOME | I aim to create pieces that add beauty and style to your space through texture and colour.

I always wanted to be an interior designer. When I was growing up I rearranged my room every six months, and re-painted it as soon as my mom would let me again. To this day I still love interior decorating and design, and eventually, I came to the realization that I could express this passion through yarn. Yarn can create a variety of textures that can fit within any interior design style, making it a perfect medium with which to create home decor. With the Handmade Home line, I’m able to combine my love of yarn and my love of interior decorating to design pieces I love making
